About Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu, often called the "Lost City of the Incas," is an ancient Incan citadel high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 feet). Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it is known for its dry-stone construction without mortar.
This UNESCO World Heritage site, a symbol of the Inca civilization, includes over 150 buildings like baths, houses, temples, and sanctuaries. Notable structures include the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows.
Undiscovered by Spanish conquistadors, Machu Picchu remained unknown until Hiram Bingham's discovery in 1911. It is now one of South America's top tourist attractions. The Urubamba River and lush green terraces enhance its beauty.
Visitors often reach Machu Picchu by hiking the Inca Trail or taking a train from Cusco. Celebrated in Peruvian culture, it is depicted on the country's currency, the sol, and continues to reveal insights into Incan engineering and spiritual practices.
